To provide the participants in the Indie Game Jam with a lot of prepared content for their experiemental games, we used sprites extracted from the WAD files of Doom, Doom engine games like Hexen and Heretic, and various Doom Total Conversions (TCs). While the source code to the IGJ games is under the GPL, the sprites are copyrighted by their respective owners. We emailed all of the TC authors to get permission to post their sprites in the game archives. Every author who responded gave us permission to post the sprites as long as we credited them. Unfortunately, a bunch of the emails in the WADs were invalid (it has been 6 years since most of them were created). Based on the overwhelmingly positive reaction by the TC authors who responded, I decided to go ahead and post the sprites from the WADs for which we did not get explicit permission. If you know how to get in contact with any of the authors we could not contact (listed below), or if you are an author and want me to remove your sprites, please let me know at checker'at'd6.com. I'd like to thank all of the TC authors for doing a bunch of great work and supporting experimental game development! If you'd like to get the sprites yourself, download the appropriate archive below, and then rip the WADs.

Stefan Maes has not responded to email to the address in the aodtc.txt file, but his homepage does not resolve at school so it's not clear if the email address is correct anymore either (although it did not bounce). Mail to the other authors bounced. If anyone knows how to get in contact with any of the authors, please let me know at checker'at'd6.com.Aliens

Permissions: The sprites used are from the freely available demo, linked above. I've gone ahead and put the necessary sprites in the game packages so that people don't have to download the demo and the WAD ripping tools. Legally, this is a bit sketchy since the game content is copyrighted, but if someone official wants to send me email at checker'at'd6.com, I'll be happy to take them out and then people will simply have to download the demos and rip the wads themselves.Hexen Demo

Permissions: Unfortunately, we didn't think very hard about making the IGJ games distributable after the Jam. We provided the complete set of Doom 2 sprites to the participants, and of course they got used in a lot of the games. Doom 2 is commercial software and is not freely available, which means you'll have to either find your old copy of Doom 2 on floppies, or buy a new copy to play some of the IGJ games as they were designed. You can buy Doom 2 electronically at the above link, and immediately download the game. Then, you can rip the wads yourself. Sorry for the inconvenience. If someone official can give me permission to redistribute the sprites, that would be great (email me at checker'at'd6.com).Return to Indie Game Jam Home
